Internet Safety 101SM: Empowering Parents Program Strides

April 4, 2008

The production of the cornerstone Internet Safety 101SM: Empowering Parents chapter-segmented edu-teaching video is well underway. Our production has grown and evolved into a robust video that spans the current and emerging threats online and, which will educate and equip parents with Internet safety basics that can be applied across all platforms. As we have continued presenting Internet Safety 101SM content elements to parents across the country, it has remained clear that parents are hungry for a comprehensive resource on online safety.

We have been working tirelessly to ensure that we reach parents with the Internet safety information and Rules 'N' ToolsSM in a way they understand, while still addressing the continually evolving nature of the web. As our program has expanded, we remain sensitive to the time demands on parents and children today; the Internet Safety 101SM video is conveniently divided into chapters for easy viewing. In accordance with EIE's mission to make the Internet safer for children and families, EIE established an Internet Safety Council to provide guidance, expertise and recommendations relating to best practices, educational resources, safety tips, rules and tools, and to provide critical insight and support for the development of EIE's Internet Safety 101SM: Empowering Parents program.

EIE has been working with the incredible Bonnemaison production team--representing more than twenty years of industry experience, knowledge, skills, imagination and award-winning talent--to work through our incredible footage to ensure that we capture the most poignant, compelling sound bites and content for use in the presentation, video packages and testimony to further educate, equip and motivate parents to be involved in their kids' online lives. We have completed 30 interviews that will undoubtedly deliver a dynamic message about Internet threats and safety solutions which include: victim testimonials, guidelines from enforcement/field experts, information from Internet safety experts, researchers, clinicians, psychologists, tips and tools from Industry leaders, and an interview with a sexual offender that will help equip parents with how to protect their children from online predators.

We continue to finalize the graphics, presentation and script details for the five-camera live teaching shoot--the common thread tying together each piece of the Internet Safety 101SM video, presented by EIE President, Donna Rice Hughes. EIE staff continues combing through the most recent reports, information and resources to incorporate into the accompanying workbook.

We look forward to a soft launch of the 101 program in Virginia to coincide with "back-to-school" season and Virginia Internet Safety Month 2008, and we are thrilled to have the continued support and partnership of the Virginia PTA, through which we will be distributing Internet Safety Kits to Virginia families, and with whom we will also be partnering with to hold statewide Internet Safety Town Halls and Internet Safety Seminars with Verizon. EIE also will be working with partners and affiliation networks throughout the country this year to further develop and prepare for the larger, national launch of the Internet Safety 101SM: Empowering Parents Program in 2009.
